Week 1
Synopsis: Introduction and Ethics – Background ideas of engineering ethics, Integrity, Ethics, code of ethics, differentiating between personal and business ethics, 

Week 2
Synopsis : ethics and the law and approaching engineering ethics problems.

Week 3
Synopsis: IEM / BEM – Definition of professionalism, understanding engineering as a profession, IEM and BEM, Structure Body, Mission, Objectives, Membership, History of BEM and IEM.

Week 4
Synopsis: REA (Registration of Engineering Act) – Act 138, Code of professional conduct, BEM guidelines, Registration of Engineering Act, function of BEM, Professional Engineering services, structure of engineering in Malaysia.

Week 5
Synopsis: PEng – Route to become PEng, Grad. Eng to PE, Recognisation, MIEM to PE, Training requirement, Training for teachers, Profesional Assesment Examination.  
                    
Week 6
Synopsis : Sustainability & Environment – Concept of sustainability, environmental issues, limitations of engineering solutions, effects of globalization,

Week 7
Synopsis : Awareness and assessment of engineering solutions on the environment. 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) concept. Renewable energy.


Week 8 : MID TERM BREAK

Week 9(a)
Synopsis: Engineering Safety and Health – Introduction to safety and health issues. 

Week 9(b)
Synopsis : Impact of safety and health on various industries. Financial, physiological and emotional implications.

Week 10
Synopsis : Safety Management Systems – lManagement systems for safety. Mandatory requirements by law – OSHA, Labor Law, Machinery and Factories Act. Elements of safety systems.

Week 11
Synopsis : Hazard Identification – Types of hazard. Levels of hazards. Routes of hazards, Symbols of hazards. Identification of hazards. Control of hazards.

Week 12
Synopsis : Risk Assessment & Management – Risk vs Danger. Levels of Risks, Methods of Assessment, Quantifying Risks, Risk Evaluation. Risks reporting and control. Minimizing Risks.

Week 13
Synopsis: HIRARC and Safety Culture – The Malaysian system – HIRARC. Legal implications of HIRARC. Outcome of HIRARC – Safety Culture. Current status of safety culture in engineering.

Week 14
Synopsis : Contract Law – Legal implication in engineering, areas of legal concern, implication of infringement. Contracts – types, duration, TOR, enforcement, cancellation, default, annulment, penalty.

MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION 1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students are able to: 1.to explain the basic concepts of automation and its relationship with the manufacturing system.
